To mark the 30th anniversary of the death of Manuel C. Baptista de Lima, the MAH pays tribute to its first director, a key figure in Azorean culture and heritage, in a presentation by Jaime Regalado, senior curator and manager of the MAH’s Militaria and Armaments Collection. As a man dedicated to heritage, particularly military heritage, his studies and efforts to preserve the movable and immovable heritage of the Azores, and of Terceira Island in particular, were fundamental. As director of the Angra do Heroísmo Museum, he was a driving force for collection and innovation, bringing the state of the art in European museology and museography directly to Terceira Island and the Museum. In a year when the theme is Autonomy, Baptista de Lima’s concern for the preservation of regional culture—manifested in the creation of a regional museum of synthesis as early as 1949—and its specific characteristics, is a theme that naturally comes to the fore in commemorating the 30th anniversary of his death (18 June 1996). The exhibition spaces of the NHMMCBL, as well as the Collections of Uniforms and Accessories, Small Arms and Heavy Weapons, will be open to visitors from 8 pm to 10 pm.
