The Museum of Angra do Heroismo commemorates today, through this publication, the clandestine voyage of Francisco Barreto Corte-Real between Terceira and São Miguel, on 17–18 May 1895. The journey was undertaken in a boat whose name marked the Azorean autonomy recently granted by the national government of Hintze Ribeiro from São Miguel. The vessel was built around 1893 by the Harbour Master of Angra, 1st Lieutenant of the Navy Teles Pamplona, in a wooden frame covered with canvas and pressed newspaper glued together. The Autonomy is part of the MAH collection and is on display in the exhibition From Sea and Land… a History in the Atlantic.
