Aerogare Civil das Lajes

The cloak is a characteristic garment of the women from Terceira Island, with evidence of it also being worn in the islands of São Miguel, São Jorge, and Graciosa as an alternative to the mantle. Records show that cloaks were worn from the 16th century until the mid-20th century. Due to the quality of the fabric and the cost of its making, the cloaks reflected high social status. These garments, often passed down to future generations, were frequently mentioned in wills and were used by entire families. This emblematic piece, which, due to its black color, gave the city a somber look, is featured in the 1927 film Documentário Terceirense by António Luis Lourenço Costa, considered the first cinematic work of the Azores. It eventually fell out of use and became a historical curiosity, promoted by ethnographic and folkloric groups or as souvenirs purchased by tourists. The piece is part of the Textile Management Unit at MAH. UNTIL APRIL 28, 2025 – AEROGARE CIVIL DAS LAJES
