Autonomous Insignia of Porfessional Merit – Viriato Garret CABINET OF CURIOSITIES

This month’s feature highlights an Autonomous Insignia of Professional Merit, awarded to recognise outstanding performance in any professional activity, whether self-employed or working for others. In 2008, this same insignia was awarded posthumously to Dr Viriato Machado da Costa Garret. During the Second World War, he settled on Terceira Island, having joined the Portugueses Air Force as a doctor, where he rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. He distinguished himself as a surgeon, being responsible for the introduction of new medical techniques in Portugal. The item forms part of the MAH’s Phaleristics Collection.
