The MAH, in collaboration with the Regional Conservatory of Angra do Heroísmo, is hosting a classical guitar concert featuring student Sara Bernardo and professor Sérgio Fernandes, with a special appearance by Gustaaf van Manen on harpsichord and organ.

The programme is eclectic, spanning a wide range of periods and styles, from Bach and Georg Böhm to cotemporary composers such as Leo Brouwer, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Jorge Cardoso.

Sara Bernardo (born in the Azores) studies at the Conservatory under the guidance of Sérgio Fernandes. She has received distinctions in national and international competitions, notably winning 1st prize in the 4th edition of the Portuguese Classical Guitar Association competition. She performs regularly as a soloist and in chamber music settings, both in the Azores and mainland Portugal.

Sérgio Fernandes (born in Brazil) began his training at the Municipal Theatre of Santos, continuing his studies in Brazil, Portugal and Spain. He holds a Master’s degree in Music from Piaget Institute and is active as both a performer and a teacher. Since 2017, he has taught at the Regional Conservatory of Angra do Heroísmo.

Gustaaf van Manen (born in the Netherlands) is a musicologist and musician, trained at the University of Amsterdam and the city’s Higher Conservatory. Based in the Azores since 1980, he taught at the Ponta Delgada Conservatory and at the Regional Conservatory of Angra do Heroísmo, where he served as president. He also taught at the University of the Azores and undertook organ studies at the Lisbon Conservatory.
