It served as a cover for one of the silos or pits used for storing cereals (wheat) at this site, probably dating back to the 16th century. These pits were commonly used by convents and similar institutions. In this case, the stone likely belonged to one of the silos of the <strong data-start=\"544\" data-end=\"569\">Miseric\u00f3rdia of Angra<\/strong>.<\/p>&#13;\n<p data-start=\"574\" data-end=\"958\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><em data-start=\"574\" data-end=\"958\" data-is-last-node=\"\">&#8220;In this city and throughout the island of Terceira, residents customarily, in the summer, when harvesting wheat, store it in pits dug into the ground, shaped like barrels [\u2026] and they say that wheat stored this way makes much better bread and yields more, remaining in the pits for three, four, or six months, or even a whole year, without suffering any significant deterioration.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gaspar Frutuoso, \u2018Saudades da Terra\u2019, 1586-1590<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This piece is part of the Stone Species Management Unit of the Museum of Angra do Hero\u00edsmo and is on display in the long-term exhibition, \u201cOf the Sea and the Land\u2026 A History in the Atlantic.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"630\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/museu-angra.cultura.azores.gov.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/banner-53.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12541 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/museu-angra.cultura.azores.gov.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/banner-53.jpg 630w, https:\/\/museu-angra.cultura.azores.gov.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/banner-53-300x190.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This stone, dome-shaped and engraved with an \u201cM\u201d on its flat surface, was recovered from the subsoil of Alto das Covas, in Angra do Hero\u00edsmo, in the 1950s.
