{"id":19734,"date":"2025-03-17T11:25:39","date_gmt":"2025-03-17T12:25:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/museu-angra.cultura.azores.gov.pt\/others\/historical-pieces\/stone-shot\/"},"modified":"2025-12-31T09:39:13","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T10:39:13","slug":"stone-shot","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/museu-angra.cultura.azores.gov.pt\/en\/others\/historical-pieces\/stone-shot\/","title":{"rendered":"Stone Shot"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-top\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 40%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><p data-start=\"109\" data-end=\"337\">The projectiles of the earliest pyrotechnic weapons (artillery) were likely made of stone, and the cannons were known as \u201cpedreiros\u201d or \u201cde roca,\u201d depending on whether they fired a single stone shot or a bag of smaller stones.<\/p>&#13;\n<p data-start=\"339\" data-end=\"542\">With the development of iron shot, stone projectiles (and the <em data-start=\"401\" data-end=\"408\">rocas<\/em>) continued to be used, particularly in large-calibre guns, as they were more effective for breaching walls during siege operations.<\/p>&#13;\n<p data-start=\"544\" data-end=\"817\">Stone shots, made from material with a density similar to that of the walls, were far more effective\u2014provided they were fired at low velocity to avoid shattering on impact\u2014than iron shots, which often became embedded in the walls and contributed little to their collapse.<\/p>&#13;\n<p data-start=\"819\" data-end=\"1408\">Measuring 16 centimetres in diameter and weighing around 20 kilograms, this iron shot, part of the <strong data-start=\"918\" data-end=\"944\">Archaeology Collection<\/strong> of the Museum of Angra do Heroismo, was discovered by chance at the top of Rua Conselheiro Jos\u00e9 Silvestre Ribeiro (near the former Casa da Roda) during electrical cabling works, at a depth of one metre.
