Known for praying with and comforting lepers\u2014who were socially ostracized at the time\u2014he became a <strong data-start=\"475\" data-end=\"542\">patron saint invoked against contagious and infectious diseases<\/strong>, with numerous legends linking him to the <strong data-start=\"585\" data-end=\"620\">eradication of plague outbreaks<\/strong>.<\/p>&#13;\n<p data-start=\"623\" data-end=\"900\">His remarkable courage in publicly reaffirming his Christian faith before <strong data-start=\"697\" data-end=\"719\">Emperor Diocletian<\/strong>, especially after surviving his first execution attempt, led to his <strong data-start=\"788\" data-end=\"824\">adoption by the LGBTQ+ community<\/strong> as a <strong data-start=\"830\" data-end=\"899\">symbol of resistance and a call for recognition within the Church<\/strong>.<\/p>&#13;\n<p data-start=\"902\" data-end=\"1210\">Saint Sebastian has long served as an icon in <strong data-start=\"948\" data-end=\"971\">artistic expression<\/strong>, especially in <strong data-start=\"987\" data-end=\"1011\">Renaissance painting<\/strong>, inspiring many artists.<br data-start=\"1036\" data-end=\"1039\"\/>This <strong data-start=\"1044\" data-end=\"1079\">Indo-Portuguese ivory sculpture<\/strong> depicts him in his <strong data-start=\"1099\" data-end=\"1119\">traditional pose<\/strong>, tied to a tree and used as a target for arrows\u2014<strong data-start=\"1168\" data-end=\"1209\">the holes for which are still visible<\/strong>.<\/p>&#13;\n<p data-start=\"1212\" data-end=\"1410\">This piece is part of the <strong data-start=\"1238\" data-end=\"1267\">Fine Arts Management Unit<\/strong> of the <strong data-start=\"1275\" data-end=\"1306\">Museum of Angra do Hero\u00edsmo<\/strong> and is on display in the long-term exhibition <em data-start=\"1353\" data-end=\"1409\">From the Land and the Sea&#8230; A History in the Atlantic<\/em>.<\/p><\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"630\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/museu-angra.cultura.azores.gov.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/banner-111.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12792 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/museu-angra.cultura.azores.gov.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/banner-111.jpg 630w, https:\/\/museu-angra.cultura.azores.gov.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/banner-111-300x190.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The veneration of Saint Sebastian, a Roman soldier who was persecuted and martyred twice for refusing to renounce his Christian faith, began in the 4th century and reached its peak during the 14th and 15th centuries, both in the Catholic and Orthodox Churches.
