She is traditionally invoked as a protector against storms and is also the patron saint of artillerymen and miners, professions historically associated with the use of gunpowder.<\/p>&#13;\n<p data-start=\"555\" data-end=\"795\">The devotion to Saint Barbara is rooted in her martyrdom: according to legend, her father\u2014who chose to act as her executioner after she converted to Christianity\u2014was struck down by a divine lightning bolt at the very moment he beheaded her.<\/p>&#13;\n<p data-start=\"797\" data-end=\"1163\">The sculpture features <strong data-start=\"820\" data-end=\"844\">broad, angular folds<\/strong>, a <strong data-start=\"848\" data-end=\"880\">mantle fastened at the chest<\/strong>, an <strong data-start=\"885\" data-end=\"905\">oval-shaped face<\/strong>, a <strong data-start=\"909\" data-end=\"923\">sharp chin<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"929\" data-end=\"948\">long, wavy hair<\/strong>\u2014all characteristic of <strong data-start=\"971\" data-end=\"1017\">15th\u201316th-century An\u00e7\u00e3 limestone sculpture<\/strong>. However, the <strong data-start=\"1032\" data-end=\"1053\">gilded polychromy<\/strong> suggests a later intervention, possibly from the <strong data-start=\"1103\" data-end=\"1119\">17th century<\/strong>, reminiscent of Baroque woodcarving styles.<\/p>&#13;\n<p data-start=\"1165\" data-end=\"1430\">Originally from the <strong data-start=\"1185\" data-end=\"1219\">Parish Church of Santa B\u00e1rbara<\/strong>, this piece was deposited in the museum on <strong data-start=\"1263\" data-end=\"1282\">October 7, 1999<\/strong>, and is now part of the <strong data-start=\"1307\" data-end=\"1336\">Fine Arts Management Unit<\/strong>.
