The cloak is a characteristic garment of the women from Terceira Island, with evidence \nof it also being worn in the islands of S\u00e3o Miguel, S\u00e3o Jorge, and Graciosa as an \nalternative to the mantle. Records show that cloaks were worn from the 16th century \nuntil the mid-20th century. Due to the quality of the fabric and the cost of its making, the \ncloaks reflected high social status. These garments, often passed down to future \ngenerations, were frequently mentioned in wills and were used by entire families. \nThis emblematic piece, which, due to its black color, gave the city a somber look, is \nfeatured in the 1927 film Document\u00e1rio Terceirense by Ant\u00f3nio Luis Louren\u00e7o Costa, \nconsidered the first cinematic work of the Azores. It eventually fell out of use and became \na historical curiosity, promoted by ethnographic and folkloric groups or as souvenirs \npurchased by tourists.
