However, there was a time when a portrait depended not only on the artistic ability and time-consuming work of a painter, but also on the social prominence and patience of the model. Let’s look at some of the works on display in the exhibition From Sea and Land | A History in the Atlantic to understand how a portrait was made and how the colours, lines, position and objects that accompany each of the subjects reveal their personality and tell us about the era in which they lived.
