No one talks about the colonial war, or when they do, they always talk about it in a distorted way. The weight of the war in Africa is very strong. The idea that the Portuguese are a gentle people has been widely promoted. We are not really a gentle people. We have never had sufficiently intense capitalist development dynamics in our society to generate a strong individualistic philosophy. It is due to the absence of this philosophy that we have not yet reached such acute levels of racial tension as seen in more developed countries.
