Bags, influenced by bourgeois fashion, are accessories used to store and carry personal belongings—in this case, pocket watches, which were regarded as objects of prestige and social display, and a complement to men’s attire. These bags, produced locally on Terceira Island in the first half of the 20th century, made of wool in various colours, shapes, and stitches, are fine examples of craftsmanship. They were often given by a mother or girlfriend as a symbol of commitment.
They are part of the Textiles Collection of the Museum of Angra do Heroismo and were featured in the exhibition Mechanics of Time in June 2016, in the Capítulo Gallery.
