Plough

The plough is one of the most emblematic agricultural tools used in the farming practices of these islands over the centuries.

The Terceira plough highlighted here is of the radial type, one of the most archaic forms, as its three structural components – the share, the tailpiece, and the beam – converge at a single vertex, providing the balance necessary for tilling the soil and giving it a striking formal elegance.

It belongs to the MAH’s Ethnography Collection and is displayed in the first section of the long-term exhibition “From the Sea and the Land… a History of the Atlantic”, entitled “Knowledge of the Atlantic Islands”, which explores the discovery and settlement of the Azores.
