Palmitos are arrangements made with artificial flowers, symmetrical in design, traditionally used to decorate oratories and altars, with conventual origins.
The production of flowers for embellishing liturgical spaces and decorating the platforms used in processions was one of the tasks undertaken by nuns in convents. The refinement of their craftsmanship and the value of the raw materials made them prestigious items and an important source of income for Azorean convents during the 18th and 19th centuries.
This piece was donated to the Museu de Angra do Heroísmo by the craftswoman Gabriela Mota Faria, following a workshop held in 2019 at the museum’s Educational Service, in collaboration with the Regional Center for Support to Handicrafts, which demonstrated the making of these decorative artifacts.
