Nu, de Victor Câmara

Victor Câmara (1921-1998), born in Ponta Delgada, was a caricaturist, portraitist, and painter. He studied under Artur Viçoso May and Domingos Rebelo. In 1957, after a successful exhibition at the National Society of Fine Arts, he settled in Lisbon.

This oil painting is part of the Fine Arts Collection of the Museu de Angra do Heroísmo.

Excerpt from the poem by Carmelo Amarante:

She is naked,
Peeks through the curtains and… feels shame,
They are waiting for her… and she feels shame,
She enters and lies down… and feels shame,
They will trace every line of her body… and she feels shame,
With every gaze… she feels shame,
Time passes and she remains still… feels shame,
Silence is broken by the sound of strokes and brushwork… and she is ashamed,
She is beautiful… she knows it, but feels shame,
It’s over… she returns home and feels shame,
She has just earned her bread for a few more days… and feels shame,
She is naked… and no longer feels shame.
