13.03.2000 - 30.09.2000

13 March to 30 September
This exhibition forms part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the Museum of Angra do Heroísmo and represents a return to its origins.

Founded on 30 March 1949 under the inspiration of the Instituto Histórico da Ilha Terceira, the Museum was a decisive milestone in the history of local culture.

The exhibition is based on a thorough study and reflection on the Museum’s origins and draws on research carried out by Helena Ormonde, technical advisor to the Museum, as part of her Master’s course in Museology and Heritage. The exhibition is supported by detailed study and investigation of the proposed theme, as well as the preparation of scientific, museological, and museographic programmes.

It is intended for the entire local community, visitors to the island, and especially for those who have worked in the field of popular culture, as well as students, recent graduates, and researchers.

Through this exhibition, the ethnographic collection of the Museum of Angra do Heroísmo gains new visibility and significance, providing a basis for debate and reflection on its future framework and permanent public presentation. It highlights the scientific study of the social heritage of the people of Terceira Island and the Azores more broadly, encompassing the study of various aspects of both spiritual and material culture.
