This month’s feature highlights three small traffic signs from the 20th century, made of metal plate and painted by hand. With the evolution of road traffic, and following successive international conventions, to which Portugal has adhered, there has been a progressive increase in the number of traffic signs and their respective categories – information, obligation, danger and prohibition. The signs on display reflect these categories: the triangular sign, corresponding to a danger warning, indicates the proximity of a school or a place frequented by children; the circular sign represents a traffic prohibition for vehicles with trailers; and the quadrangular sign, for information, indicates the proximity of a hospital. Since 2021, the pieces have been part of the MAH’s Transport Collection.
