Groupers are bony fish belonging to the Epinephelidae family. They number around 160 species. In this exhibition, you can find fifty original illustrations of groupers from around the world. Geographical distribution (vast or confined), behaviours, fishing importance and aesthetic, and, therefore, subjective, criteria were considered during the selection process of the specimens in display. Most groupers inhabit warm temperate and tropical waters, in depths up to two hundred meters. Although, some species can be found at greater, as well as, shallower depths. Around 75% of all known species can be found in the indo-Pacific. Groupers are a protoginic hermaphroditic species. In a Protoginic hermaphroditic species every individual is born female and change sex to male once a certain size is reached. Many of the species depend on time and place specific concentrated gatherings to reproduce. Direct fishing targets a significant number of grouper species. Under the parameters of Groupers and Wrasses Specialist Group within the International Union for Conservation Of Nature (IUCN), 13% of groupers are registered as under threat of extinction.
