Air Base 4 Command Building

O VOO DO AÇOR, now being displayed at the command building in Air Base #4, reimagines the 2020 exhibition through a more selective lense. Most of the original pieces are on show. It’s intent, now as before, is to teach about the history of aviation in the Azores, while also giving Terceira Island a special enfasis. Therefore, the October 4th, 1930, historical flight is its centeral theme. As it was the date when the first aeroplane, within the region’s territory, took off from Achada airfield. AÇOR, as the aircraft was named, was a biplane Avro 504K mono-motor. Capitain Frederico Coelho de Melo, who had been born in Altares, in Terceira Island, was chosen as pilot due to his avition pionerring efforts.
