The Merit and Distinction | Portuguese Honorific Orders exhibition presents some examples of medals that are part of the MAH’s collection, along with insignia belonging to private collectors and family members of recipients, associating them with the personalities who received these distinctions, such as Vitorino Nemésio, Francisco de Lacerda Machado, Lieutenant Colonel José Agostinho, Adalberto Martins and others. This type of medal is rooted in a centuries-old tradition dating back to the Middle Ages and is intended to reward or distinguish, in life or posthumously, national citizens who stand out for personal merit, military or civic achievements, exceptional acts or relevant services rendered to the country.
