Collective memory has chosen to forget them… however, they were the visible face of World War I on Terceira Island. There were more than half a thousand German civilian prisoners of war concentrated in the Angra do Heroísmo Concentration Camp following Germany’s declaration of war on Portugal on 9 March 1916. This exhibition gives them back their faces, looking at their living conditions under imprisonment, the logistics involved in their stay and the impacts of their stay on the locals.
