This month’s item highlights a mold for casting sapecas, a piece made up of 6 circles with seal-like characters with the same inscription on all of them: Ch’ien feng ch’üan Bao, which translates as “original coin of the Ch’ien feng (heavenly wealth) era”, ordered to be issued by Emperor Gaozu (􀟴 􀫆). This was used as a mold for the issuance of sapecas, a term used to refer to small Chinese copper coins with a hole in the center through which a thread was passed to make them easier to carry. through which a wire was passed in order to facilitate the transportation and circulation of the coins throughout Chinese territory, throughout several dynasties until the end of the 19th century. It is part of the Numismatics and Notafilia Management Unit of the MAH.
