SÃO FRANCISCO BUILDING ROOM | MEMORIES

This month’s feature highlights a box for epaulettes, a peaked cap, and a belt with a sword knot, produced by Gieves, a company founded in 1785 that became a renowned supplier of accessories for the official uniforms of the British Royal Navy. This example, dating from the 1930s, was commissioned by David Alexander Fraser, who at the time held the rank of Lieutenant Captain. The military accessories box, made of tinned and painted sheet iron, allowed the officer to carry his uniform accessories properly protected and with ease. These pieces are part of the Military Uniforms and Accessories Management Unit at MAH.
