Dyeing is a chemical process that changes the colour of textile fibres through the use of dyes and the application of mordants that fix them. Time-consuming and complex, given the multitude of variables involved, the art of dyeing is also extremely fascinating when approached from an artisanal perspective, as it allows us to take a fresh look at the many raw materials available in nature and facilitates a rediscovery of ancestral techniques and knowledge. In this workshop, we will recall the importance of the export of woad and madder in the Azorean economy in the 15th and 16th centuries, explain the basic principles of traditional dyeing with vegetable dyes, and carry out dyeing with dye plants, using different natural fibres.
