Themed supper to commemorate the Royal Visit of King Carlos and Queen Amélia | 1 to 4 July 1901
On 21 April, at 8pm, the Museum of Angra do Heroísmo will organise a themed supper to commemorate the royal visit of King Carlos and Queen Amélia to the Azores in 1901, an event which, as Susana Serpa Silva points out, was “of great importance for publicising the islands and strengthening national unity, providing an opportunity for the locals to showcase their capabilities and strengths, but also the many shortcomings they faced.”
The event will begin at the IV moment of the exhibition From the Sea and Land… a history of the Atlantic, which includes pieces that document the kings’ stay on Terceira Island, namely the “Marinhas” by King Carlos, the Victoria that transported the monarchs and the ogival glass of the yacht D. Amélia, among others that also contextualise the period. A salute to the sovereigns published in the newspaper A União on 1 July will be read out.
The supper, which will be prepared by the Terceira Island Golf Club, will be served in the Capítulo Gallery and the menu will be inspired by the dinner offered by the monarchs at the Royal Palace (Palácio dos Capitães Generais). The meal will be complemented by an address by José Guilherme Reis Leite on the political context behind the royal visit, an explanation of the visit’s programme by Ana Almeida and Carla Devesa and a musical performance by Elena Kharambula, Mikhayl Roussal and Orest Grystsyuk. In the room, there will be a display of objects from our collection, which are in reserve, and illustrate different moments of the evoked visit.
Participation is subject to prior registration by email museu.angra.azores.gov.pt or phone 295 240 800. The cost of the meal (€20) shall be paid to the Terceira Island Golf Club.
