Through communication from TS Assunção Melo and Professor Carlos Severino, the MAH reveals the reverse panels in gilded and polychrome woodcarving discovered in the Chapel of the Third Order of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Guia. Notable examples of Mannerist heritage, possibly from the 16th century, which are believed to have been reused from the old church, display Counter-Reformation iconography, such as the radiant sun and the Latin inscription mulier amicta sole et luna sub pedibus, ‘a Woman clothed with the Sun and with the Moon under her feet’, which refers to the text of the Apocalypse and suggests the Marian origin of the panels. This discovery enhances the church’s value as a guardian of the religious and artistic memory of Terceira Island. Those present will have the unique opportunity to visit the site.
