The Museum of Angra do Heroísmo has received a large relief panel by Manuel Dias Júnior from the Banco Santander Collection, which through this initiative aims to make its artistic and cultural heritage available to the public through partnerships with museums. The cedar wood piece, now on display in the access to the cloister of the São Francisco Building, evokes, through a simple warp of symbols, details that are ingrained in Azorean culture, tradition and way of life, which justifies its inclusion in the MAH’s exhibition programme. The work of the sculptor from São Miguel Island, who lived on Terceira for some years, can be considered popular or folk art, due to the repeated stylisation of regional iconographic elements, such as those that appear on this panel: the Capote, the dove of the Holy Spirit and the bull, among others.
