As part of the 450th anniversary of the royal signing of the Regulation that established the Ombudsman of the Armed Forces, the precursor to the current Azores Maritime Zone Command, the MAH, in partnership with this military entity, is promoting a lecture given by Dr. José Guilherme Reis Leite, on the theme of the Ombudsman of the Armed Forces of the Azores. The Ombudsman’s Office of the Armed Forces was created in 1575 by the Portuguese Crown with the aim of supervising and protecting maritime traffic in the seas of the Azores, given the growing geostrategic importance of the archipelago during the Maritime Expansion. As part of the celebrations of this anniversary, this event aims to highlight the historical and strategic importance of the Azores Maritime Zone Command, highlighting its role in maritime security and the defence of Portuguese naval interests over the centuries. The event will feature a musical performance by Gustaaf van Manen and a guided tour of the II Moment – Angra, Universal Port of Call of the Western Sea – of the Museum’s main exhibition circuit, From the Sea and the Land… A History in the Atlantic, by MAH senior technician João Lemos.
