Once defeated on the mainland, António’s faction found in Terceira, during the years 1581-1583, one of the last bastions of resistance against Philip II of Spain. During this period, coins were minted in the Azorean territory for the first time. It was then that the Real de Angra appeared, which is a treasure trove of Portuguese numismatics. We will try to understand its historical and symbolic importance, as well as its place in the economy and politics of resistance in Terceira.
