Manuel Coelho Baptista de Lima Military History Branch

With the arrival of the British forces on Terceira Island on 8 October 1943, in the context of World War II, it was inevitable that there would be casualties. Therefore, it was imperative to create infrastructures that would provide treatment for the wounded and a dignified religious burial for the dead.
In this context, the Terra Chã Military Hospital was taken and the “Cemitério dos Ingleses” (Cemetery for the English) was built, which is actually a Commonwealth cemetery that housed the remains of soldiers of all nationalities who served under the flag of the United Kingdom, and is still a War Memorial today.
The conference will address this pressing and almost always forgotten aspect of the British presence on Terceira Island, the 80th anniversary of which is being celebrated this year.
The activity is open to the public, and the military exhibition spaces, as well as the Uniforms and Accessories, Light and Heavy Weapons reserves will be open to visitors from 20:00 to 23:00.
