The film depicts the adventures and loves of low-class boys from the city of Porto. It is an invocation of childhood through the eyes of the director, which goes back to the 1940s, at the height of the Second World War and in the midst of Oliveira Salazar’s fascist regime. Aniki Bobó emphasises the passion of a shy boy for a girl from his school. She will push him beyond the limits dictated by the adult world, due to him stealing a doll and having to live with the guilt of that action.
