The Museum of Angra do Heroísmo is hosting the launch of a book by Terceira author Ofélia Vieira, entitled Mendonza – Uma Família de Castela e a Casa do Espanhol nas Lages (Mendonza – A Family from Castile and the Spanish House in Lages). The book explores the history of the Mendonza family, linked to the long-distance maritime navigation that drove Iberian expansion, thanks to the religious orders that administered it at the time. They were the first and main patrons of the great maritime voyages aimed at expanding the Christian crusades, starting from Portugal and Castile. The narrative follows the journey of this Spanish family, who first settled in Portugal, then in Madeira, and finally in Lajes on Terceira Island. The ‘Casa do Castelhano’, located in Caldeira das Lajes, is a distinctive rural building, possibly associated with a large old farm in Ramo Grande. Everything indicates that its agricultural activity was linked to sericulture (silk production) for international trade. The presentation of the work will be given by José Correia Guedes.
