Lecture by Alexandre Reis, Military Museum of the Azores senior technician
During World War II, in a context of great uncertainty and instability, the Azores witnessed the largest movement of Portuguese troops during the conflict, totalling 25,000 men, who were spread across the islands of São Miguel, Terceira and Faial. The sudden increase in the number of military personnel, combined with the lack of military hospitals in the Azores, the very limited capacity of civilian hospitals and the prevalence of endemic diseases in the region forced the Azores Military Command to urgently set up new hospital centres. This conference will focus on the causes that led to the construction of military hospitals on Terceira, how they were planned, built and how they functioned. The exhibition spaces of the Boa Nova Nucleous, as well as the Uniforms, Light Weapons and Heavy Weapons reserves will be open to visitors from 20:00 to 23:00.
