Luís Cardoso is a cartoonist from mainland Portugal who lives in the Azores. Although his satire is not restricted to the reality of the islands, Azoreanity is very much present in his work, as is the title of the book he published in 2013, “Açorianite Aguda (e outra maleitas)”, and the names of his two exhibitions in São Miguel (2011/2012) and more recently in Terceira (2015): “A Preto e Branco”, “Muuugidos” and “Gaitadaria”. In his weekly column in the “Correio dos Açores”, the interaction between “Morgana”, an Azorean cow, and “Toni”, a rooster (from Barcelos), who embodies the mainlander who strives to please the locals even if he doesn’t understand them, allows for a blunt and satirical, but always humorous and often eternalised characterisation of a society in which “Maleitas” are recognisable, but also an undeniable charm. Recently, Luís Cardoso has also collaborated with the news website www.9idazoresnews.com, with cartoons and illustrations that frame the texts in the opinion section. It is this humorous and critical view of Azorean life, which is also present in the many anecdotes in the “Almanaque do Camponez” (Farmer’s Almanac), that justifies the commented presentation of a set of cartoons by Luís Cardoso, as part of the programme to promote the exhibition marking the 100th anniversary of this local publication.
