Collective memory has chosen to forget them… However, they were the visible face of World War I on Terceira Island and there were more than half a thousand German prisoners in Angra do Heroísmo’s German Internment Camp following Germany’s declaration of war on Portugal on 9 March 1916.
We hold a unique photo album, which was donated by Alfred Hölzer, the grandson of a detained German, which gave that community back a face through a visual two-year narrative, revealing their living conditions under the regime of imprisonment, internal social stratification and the logistics inherent in their stay on the island.
