Angra do Heroismo Customs Delegation - Cais da Alfândega

From February to May
Camera obscuras played with shadow and light. Glass, copper or metal plates. Prints of silver, varnish or enamel. Ambrotypes, calotypes, daguerreotypes and ferrotypes: names of time-consuming and costly processes for recording images that were intended to be immortal, because they were pieces of memory(s). Methods that would become obsolete on 6 August 1884, when George Eastman and William Walker registered the patent for the photographic film roll in New York. A revolution was beginning where, by combining film and photographic paper, all it took was the press of a button to capture each and every moment. A development whose evolution can be seen in the exhibition of cameras in our Science and Technology Collection.
