MUSEUM OF ANGRA DO HEROÍSMO SÃO FRANCISCO BUILDING . 13:00

The month of October marks the return of a new cycle of Thematic Lunchtime Visits. The first session will be dedicated to weights and measures. The various measures of length, volume and weight have been a matter of interest since biblical time. Their ongoing need for standardisation led the people to ask King Afonso IV to standardise them, for example, at the Lisbon courts in 1352. Although the fulfilment of metrological determinations and reforms was reiterated over the centuries through municipal ordinances, it wasn’t until 1812, through the Weights and Measures Commission, that Portugal adopted the metric system, which was introduced in France a year after its Revolution.
The visit will be led by the MAH’s senior technician, Carla Devesa.
The lunch service will cost €12 and be provided by Ponto V. It will start at midday and requires prior reservation by e-mail ([email protected]) or phone (295 240 800)
