Manuel Coelho Baptista de Lima Military History Branch

We will continue our collaboration with collector Cristóvão Azevedo with a third exhibition, still on the theme of the Cold War, but dedicated to the patches of squadrons and unit support groups at the Lajes Base.

The foundation of Base das Lajes, a project that predates the British presence
Communication by Captain Pedro Ventura

To talk about aviation in the Azores, and particularly on Terceira Island, it is necessary to talk about the Lajes plain and the aeronautical advent that took place there since 1941.
Before the Portuguese-British agreements of 1943, the pioneering Lajes Airfield had already been used by the Portuguese Air Force, which had installed its Gloster Gladiators of the No. 2 Expeditionary Fighter Squad there, flying under the command of Lieutenant Aviator Machado Barros.
It is this foundation, which predates the British arrival, which is important to study and analyse from a military point of view, but also from a social, economic, and cultural point of view. Captain Pedro Ventura will give a presentation focused on these very concepts. He has a degree in History from New University of Lisbon and a postgraduate degree in Information Sciences from the same university and is pursuing a PhD in Atlantic History at the University of the Azores.
The exhibition spaces of the Boa Nova Branch, as well as the Uniforms, Light and Heavy Weapons reserves will be open to visitors from 20:00 to 23:00.
