We live in a world of the Internet of Things (IoT).
The Internet has completely changed our lives. Today we can buy coffee online, buy plane tickets and manage our bank accounts. We can watch films, play games and communicate in real time with people on the other side of the globe. We can control our household appliances without being at home, we can see what the weather is like in a given city before travelling there, measure biometric data and send it directly to a doctor, among many other things.
But how did it all start? How has it evolved, and how can we navigate safely in an ocean that is becoming increasingly vast and more present in our daily lives?
What threats lurk in its waters? What precautions are taken to ensure that we reach a safe harbour? What is the value of our privacy and our data?
What do these new terms mean: bitcoin, blockchain, dark web, IoT, phishing, scam, SSL certificates, encryption? What does the eternal fight between white-hats and black-hats consist of?
These and other issues related to security and the vast world of the Internet will be addressed in the lecture.
