European Night of the Museums 2026

Azores – 50 years of Autonomy

_

On 16 May, the Night of Museums returns as an event that, through the celebration of the universal value of the collections of the Museum of Angra do Heroísmo and collaboration with various public and private partners, offers a diverse cultural and leisure programme.

In the 2026 edition, the 50 years of constitutional autonomy of the Azores are commemorated, marking a decisive moment in the Region’s collective history.

Accordingly, in addition to the usual food stalls in the cloister, the opening of storage and exhibition areas, and the activities of the Educational Service, the evening highlights the concert performance by Cães do Mar, À Bolina no Autonomia. Within the same context, the whaleboat “Autonomia” will also be presented, forming part of the main exhibition route in the São Francisco Building, From Sea and Land… a history in the Atlantic.

The programme also features a lecture and exhibition on the Terceira pony, promoted by the Terceira Pony Association, complemented by pony rides for younger visitors, and a Baroque music concert by organist and musicologist Gustaaf van Manen, who this year marks ten years as a musical resident at the MAH.

The evening closes with music from the 1970s and 1980s, curated by Albano, evoking the historical context of the period of Autonomy.
