This small oval-shaped basket with a lid, made of straw and wicker, is a piece of work attributed to the African chiefs – Ngungunhane and his companions – who were captured by Mouzinho de Albuquerque in 1895. After spending some time in detention in Lisbon, they were transferred to Terceira, where they were held in confinement at Monte Brasil. There, they turned to their traditions, hunting and basketry, to keep their hands and minds occupied, but also to interact with the local people to whom they sold, or gave away, their work. The piece is part of the MAH’s Ethnography Collection.
