Powder Flask

This glass flask, containing black powder for small arms, not only reveals the form of early 19th-century gunpowder grains, but also commemorates the Bravos do Mindelo. Its handwritten label reads:

Powder used in the Campaigns of Liberty 1826–1834
Powder offered by Major Sebastião Teixeira Carrascosa who, holding the rank of 2nd ensign, landed on the beaches of Mindelo on 8 July 1832, celebrating his 18th birthday on that day.

Sebastião Teixeira Carrascosa was one of the men from Terceira who joined the Liberal Army and, in the context of the Civil War, departed from Terceira Island in June 1832, landing near Mindelo at Pampelido Beach, an action that was decisive for the capitulation of D. Miguel in 1834.

This flask, on display in the exhibition Men, Weapons and War – From Arrow to Drone, is part of the Militaria and Weaponry Collection of the Museum of Angra do Heroismo.
