SYNOPSIS “My opinion is that in Portugal, if there are subjects that are clearly taboo, one is the issue of the colonial war. No one talks about the colonial war, or when they do, they always talk about it in a distorted way. The weight of the war in Africa is very strong. The idea that the Portuguese are a gentle people has been widely promoted. We are not really a gentle people. We have never had sufficiently intense capitalist development dynamics in our society to generate a strong individualistic philosophy. It is due to the absence of this philosophy that we have not yet reached such acute levels of racial tension as seen in more developed countries. (João Santos Lopes, author of Às vezes Neva em Abril) Will it continue to be this way for much longer? Forty years later, this is the question we want to see answered, as a provocation!
