In the words of Carlos Bessa, ‘Rui Melo shows an ability to balance the static and the dynamic through a personal grammar that individualises landscapes and points of view, enveloping them in a staged illumination that leads the viewer’s gaze to the edges of the abyss or that which remains, like an emotional stretch, percolating within the spectator. And the gravity of these uncertain footprints and restlessness is amplified in works where white multiplies and expands as if aiming for a kind of absolute.’
Mistérios de Tinta | Paintings by Carolina Rocha
Carolina’s work results from plastic experimentation that sometimes brings unexpected results, in tune with events not controlled by the artist, such as the eruption of lava from a volcano. The unpredictability of the plastic process coincides with the imminence of this natural phenomenon to which the Azorean islands are subject.
